Exploring the Use of Race in Clinical Algorithms

CHEA is happy to announce that we are among a team awarded a grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The Penn Center for Evidence-based Practice is 1 of 9 evidence-based practice centers awarded a grant from AHRQ, in partnership with Penn Medicine’s Clinical Pathways Program, Penn Medicine’s Predictive Healthcare Team, ECRI and the Institute for Safe Medication Practices Patient Safety Organization, and Ripple Effect. 

This grant will be used to address bias in race-based clinical algorithm tools. These algorithms can impact clinical recommendations based on race. However, race is not a physiological trait but is still used as a biomedical marker in medicine. The Analysis of Race-Based Algorithms plans to examine the full scope of the potential harm, and hopefully uncover solutions to the problem.
