Racial and Ethnic Diversity at Medical Schools

Nov 5, 2021

A perspectives piece published in the New England Journal of Medicine co-authored by CHEA’s founder and Executive Director, Dr. Jaya Aysola, discusses the minimal progress of representation in medical school faculty. Recent AAMC data shows that only 5.5% of medical school faculty are Hispanic, Latinx, or of Spanish origin; 3.6% are Black or African American; and 0.2% are Native American or Alaskan Native. Racial and ethnic groups that are underrepresented in medicine (URM) continue to represent a significantly proportion of faculty, with little movement in a positive direction. Many barriers exist within academic medical institutions for URM to advance to a faculty position. Structural inequities, disparities in education, and system-level biases are among the multitude of barriers that students and candidates face. It is on the institutions to deconstruct these barriers and widen the focus of their efforts. The authors put forth five recommendations for medical schools to advance their diversity and inclusion efforts. Read the recommendations by clicking the link below!
