Experiences with CHEA

“I have had the pleasure of working with the Center for Health Equity Advancement over the past several months on a project related to a potential racial/ethnic disparity in our emergency department. Throughout our work with the Center, I have been impressed with the professionalism and thoughtfulness they have brought to the discussions around a sensitive topic. Their knowledge and skills in guiding us though this new and important exploration in how to improve care for all of our patients has been invaluable.”

— Karen Pinsky, MD
Chief Medical Officer, Chester County Hospital

“In November 2019, Dr. Aysola delivered our inaugural Ob/gyn Health Equity Grand Rounds lecture. As a result of her lecture, we incorporated department-wide bias-mitigating concepts into our resident interview structure. More recently, we have worked with her while she has provided invaluable input and guidance to one of our residents who wants to pursue a career in health equity research. In this meeting, we watched her transform a project that was initially beyond the reach of a resident into a viable, exciting resident-appropriate project. That she would take the time to dedicate to a resident not even in her department is a testament to her level of commitment. Finally, we have worked with Jaya on developing a simulation case for Penn Medicine’s Health Equity Week illustrating challenges that patients and providers face regarding bias in health care, and once again, she has focus and insight that has been invaluable. Jaya has incredible scholarly achievement and knowledge, charisma, kindness, humor, and absolute devotion to the cause of health equity.”

“Dr. Aysola is well-known amongst students with interests in health equity at the medical school. It’s a testament to her broad expertise as a mixed methodologist, her excellent time management skills, and unique management style, that she can help a diverse group of students with different styles and skillsets develop and execute research questions and community engagement initiatives. She has connected me with other students across her network of mentees leading to lasting and productive collaborations. Through her I have been able to expand my own network and in this way she facilitates the development of the next generation of physicians and health-services researchers.”

— Lanair Lett, MD/PhD Candidate

“Dr. Aysola is a true leader in our institution in the area of health equity and in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion here at Penn Medicine.  She is multi-talented and brings the highest caliber of servant leadership, research methodology, organizational skills, and true advocacy and commitment for solving the challenges of equity that so plague the health care system across our nation.  For example, we at FOCUS on Health & Leadership for Women have repeatedly sought Dr. Aysola’s involvement in planning strategies for advancing  women’s careers at Penn. She is able to work across multiple centers, departments, and programs, bringing colleagues together with her data-driven approach and her emotionally-intelligent team building skills of respect and inclusiveness!”

    Partner with us

Here at PENN we have the opportunity to lead the charge in creating a health system learning environment that mindfully strives to achieve health equity. The Penn Medicine Center for Health Equity Advancement (CHEA) was born out of this need.

CHEA is uniquely situated within the Office of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), University of Pennsylvania Health System and reflects a critical partnership between the Offices of the CMO and the Office of Inclusion and Diversity (OID) at Perelman School of Medicine. The Center is also the home within the health system for the Penn Medicine Program for LGBT Health.
